Week One of the Veggies

I picked up my first CSA box this afternoon. The newsletter tells me that the first couple of weeks are greens-heavy and on the small side. Here's what I got!

Newsletter also tells me that those green things are arugula, swiss chard, kale, and lettuce. Anyone care to identify which is which for me?

I'm planning on trying a few recipes over the next couple of days - - I'll share any good finds with you!

  1. Looks good. I wish I could help you with which is which but I have no clue. I very interested in the recipes you choose. :)

  2. The kale is right next to the carrots.

Kale is excellent to use in green smoothies. It has so much good stuff in it. My favourite green smoothie is 2 bananas, a cup of frozen sliced strawberries, a leaf or two of kale, 2 Tbsp of wheat germ (optional), a squirt of honey and 2/3 cup water. Sometimes I use spinach instead of kale, or frozen blueberries instead of strawberries. Have one or two a day!

The box looks great, can't wait to see what you do with it! :)

  3. Oh, and the lettuce is up top by the baking soda. I believe the swiss chard is above the onion and the argula is to the left of the onion.

  4. Judging from these wiki sites, I believe the kale is the far left and swiss chard to the far right (above onion). I'm a little confused about the lettuce and arugula.

The lettuce page shows a pic with "red" tipped greenery, but the labels above it (in chalk when you enlarge the photo) aren't clear as to whether the "red" stuff is a red lettuce or arugula.

It was my impression that arugula had a bit of a "red" edge, but that might be wrong...so, I'm not sure. :(

  5. ok, so i thought we were sharing? anyway, congrats on going vege, but keep up the protein. by the way, the kale does have purple in it and i definitely don't like it! i pick it out of my salads. however, the smoothie recipe from hippie housewife actually sounded somewhat good.

  6. thanks for the ID help ladies! I'm going to try an arugula pasta thing tomorrow I believe. Need to go get the other ingredients. I can't wait until I'm not working and I have time to cook with these things when I get them rather than hoping they last till the weekend!

I'm going to try your smoothie too, Cynthia. sounds good!

As for the carrots - I'm turning those into a carrot cake - and that's how I'll share with you, mother :-p
