Fried Green Tomatoes

Fried Green Tomatoes. Yet another southern delicacy that I've never had the pleasure of enjoying before. A scene of the movie of the same name was even filmed in my home town (not that I've seen the movie either...) The scene had something to do with a fender bender in a grocery store parking lot or something. Anywho.

I got a green tomato in my CSA box the other week and figured I'd try the frying thing. They turned out pretty good - in the future I'd add more spices to the flour mixture and slice the tomatoes thinner.

Here's what I did:

You need three bowls. In one - mix 1/2 cup flour, salt, and peeper. In the second beat one egg. In the third crush half a pack of saltine crackers.

Heat a couple tablespoons each of olive oil and butter in a skillet.

Slice a green tomato.

Dip the tomato in the egg, then flour, then egg, then crackers. Repeat with each slice.

Fry the tomato in the oil/butter mixture until golden brown on each side - about five minutes.

Serve hot!

  1. The film is not one of my favorites, but the scene in the parking lot, featuring Miss Kathy Bates, whom I adore, is perhaps the best scene in the film. Try equal amounts of flour and corn meal. Actually, I probably use two parts corn meal to one part flour. I also use obscene amounts of freshly ground black pepper. Lawry's Seasoned Salt is also a good ingredient. You're right about slicing the tomatoes thinly. The fried green tomatoes on offer at J. Henry's are good, but I do not like the sauce. Actually, I don't believe fried green tomatoes require any sauce. For a special treat, fry the tomatoes in bacon grease (or at least add some bacon grease to the oil).

  2. I absolutely love fried green tomatoes. Especially if they are fixed right. I've never heard of using crackers in it before. The movie is pretty good. :)

  3. How awesome! I'll have to try these, because my husband "Loves MawMaw's" fried green tomatoes. I've never had them. So I'll have to try them :)

  4. I have a full bag of these in the bottom of my fridge. I really need to fix them up. I've never heard of using crushed crackers with them. I make them exactly like I do fried squash.

I remember the movie title, but not the movie itself.

  5. I've never tried these, primarily because I never see green tomatoes in my part of the woods. Looks good though!
